Fresh Key Limes
When we were renovating our place in KW, Steve, one of the contractors, told us about the wonderful key lime tree he had in his yard. It was prime picking season for key limes and Steve had many limes. So one morning before he came to work at our house he went out in his backyear and picked us bunch of fresh key limes from his tree and brought them to us. They are small, about the size of the green limes we get in the supermarket.
So that afternoon, we set out to make a fresh key lime pie. Neal squeezed the juice from the limes. They were quite juicy - much juicier than we had expected.
Then he mixed the key lime juice with condensed milk, egg, sugar and the other ingredients together.
We decided to make a merange topping so Neal wisked the egg whites by hand...
...and spread it on top of the pie.
Then it was off to the oven and we watched it bake.
And then it was done!
What else can you do with fresh key limes you ask? Key lime martini's, of course!
Fresh key limes are really amazing. The differance between right-from-the-tree key limes and the ones from the store is as noticable as fresh tomatoes from the backyard versus store bought tomatoes.. Needless to say, we really enjoyed the key limes. Thanks Steve!
