MLK, Jr. Weekend
On the Saturday of MLK, Jr weekend, we went to Newton for the birthday party at Matt and Amy's house. On Sunday of the long weekend, Neal wanted to put some additional insulation under the eaves. While we were pulling everything out, we came across the old glass window shelves that had been in the eaves for years - long before we bought the house. After 23 years in the house, we decided it was not likely that we would use them so we'd throw them away. When we pulled them out, we found them wrapped in newspapers from the 1940's. This is the Boston Traveler from June 29, 1945.
Hovey's Corset Shop was having a sale on easy-to-care-for girdles with firm control. What do you say, girls. Want to head over?
Filene's had some top-knots for women's hair on sale.
"Bombs and Bonds" - Series E savings bonds were for sale to support our troops.
Back to the eaves....Neal cleaned out the space so he could move around a little bit better. It's tight up there.
Then we headed to Home Depot to get the supplies. When we got to the insulation section, there were so many different kinds to choose from - who would have known? But Neal knew exactly what he wanted and found it right away.
We got all the rest of the supplies - masks, strapping, nails, cutters, etc.
Neal loaded everything in the car and put the strapping on the roof.
He checked to be sure it was all safely secured to the roof rack before we drove away.
Once we got it home, Neal put on the mask to protect himself from the fiberglass and got right to work.
He carefully measured each section for size before he cut it.
It was messy and tight but Neal did a great job. When he was done, we put everything back and now the house is warmer and tighter. Since it was MKL, Jr. weekend, we had Monday off from work, too. When we woke up on Monday, it was cold and snowy. So, I decided to make us some breakfast. I made ebelskivers which are small, round filled pancakes.
You can fill them with anything (including chocolate!). I decided to fill half of them with pecan pumkin butter and the other half with elderberry jelly.
And we enjoyed them at the kitchen counter.
As I said, it was a cold, snowy Monday.
Eventually, we had to head out into the elements and shovel the snow. Neal fired up his snowblower and got to work clearing off the driveway.
He also clears a path to his birdfeeds so he can keep them filled during the winter months.
When it snows, my job is to shovel the walkways and to clear the snow from the roof so we don't get any ice dams. I use a 'snow rake' that helps pull the snow from the roof.
When we were done, we were cold and wet. So we headed back inside and Neal made us some hot chocolate.
He made it using the chocolate we bought at the "Hotel Chocolate" on Newbury Street when we were in the city for our Christmas weekend. It came out really great and hit the spot after being outside in the cold!
It was a great l-o-n-g weekend for us. We hope you stayed warm and dry and enjoyed your weekend, too!
